What Would Paul Klee Say?

Dr. Kym Tabulo is an abstract sequential artist who combines the conventions of traditional comics with abstract painting and drawing to achieve works on paper and canvas using a range of formats, scales, techniques and media, including comics books. She is the author of the abstract graphic novel The Drift of Impure Thoughts (2014) and three abstract comics books such as What Would Paul Klee Say? (2016). Her solo exhibitions – The Drift of Impure Thoughts (2015), Abstract Comics #1 (2017), Abstract Comics #2 (2018), and Abstract Comics #3 (2019) – show how her work explores the tenuous boundaries between abstract comics art and abstract fine art. They were created in response to the new theory generated by her practice-based doctoral thesis – Abstract Sequential Art: An Experimental and Experiential Investigation (2016). Tabulo has published an academic paper about this topic, and has spoken at four international conferences, including The Third International Conference on Comics: Comics Rock!, and The Fourth World Congress of the International Society for Education through Art. For the last eight years she has taught secondary students the Art of Abstract Comics. As well as creating new works, she continues to write about this field, believing that Abstract Comics is truly a 21st Century phenomenon.
